Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831) was a Prussian general and military theorist who served in the Napoleonic Wars, including the campaigns of 1806, 1812 (the Russian campaign), and 1815. He was director of the Prussian War Academy from 1818 to 1830. He died of cholera in 1831 before completing his planned revision of On War. His wife, Marie von Clausewitz, edited and published the manuscript the following year. On War has been continuously in print since 1832 and has influenced strategists, politicians, and scholars across the world.
