Stephen Hawking (1942–2018) was a theoretical physicist and cosmologist at the University of Cambridge, where he held the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics — a position once held by Isaac Newton. His scientific work focused on the nature of black holes, the origin of the universe, and quantum gravity. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at 21 and continued working at the highest level of physics for more than fifty years.
