Tara Westover was born in 1986 in rural Idaho, the youngest of seven children in a survivalist family that did not register her birth or enroll her in school. She taught herself enough to pass the ACT and enrolled at Brigham Young University at seventeen. She later earned a PhD in intellectual history from Cambridge University and held visiting fellowships at Harvard. Educated, published in 2018, was her debut book and became an immediate bestseller, spending more than two hundred weeks on the New York Times list. She has not published a second book.
