William L. Shirer (1904–1993) was an American journalist and historian who worked as a foreign correspondent in Europe from the late 1920s through World War II, including several years reporting from Berlin for CBS Radio. He was present at the signing of the French armistice in 1940 and attended numerous Nazi rallies and state events before being forced to leave Germany in 1940. After the war he drew on captured Nazi documents and his own notes to write The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, published in 1960.
