Books by Arkady Martine

Arkady Martine is the pen name of Ana Mikhailova, an American author and scholar who holds a doctorate in Byzantine history from the University of Minnesota. Her academic work focuses on infrastructure, empire, and the transmission of cultural knowledge. A Memory Called Empire, her debut novel, won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2020; its sequel, A Desolation Called Peace, won the same award in 2021, making Martine the first author to win back-to-back Hugos for a debut and its sequel. She lives in New Mexico and has spoken about the ways her academic background shapes her fiction's preoccupation with empire and cultural assimilation.
