Gabriel Wyner is an American opera singer turned language-learning entrepreneur. Trained first as a mechanical engineer and then as an opera singer, he needed near-native pronunciation in German, Italian, French and Russian, and reverse-engineered a self-teaching method to get there, later adding Hungarian. Fluent Forever (2014) grew out of a widely shared essay on his approach; he went on to run one of the most-funded app campaigns in Kickstarter history to build the Fluent Forever app and company, extending the book's pronunciation-first, spaced-repetition system into software.
