She grew up on the South Side of Chicago, attended Princeton University and Harvard Law School, and worked as a hospital administrator and nonprofit director before entering public life. As First Lady, her initiatives included Let's Move, a national childhood health campaign, and Reach Higher, focused on college access for underserved students. Becoming, published in 2018, sold more than seventeen million copies worldwide and won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. Her follow-up, The Light We Carry, was published in 2022.
