Haruki Murakami is one of Japan's most celebrated and internationally read novelists, known for The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, and 1Q84, among many others. He was born in Kyoto in 1949, studied drama at Waseda University, and ran a jazz bar in Tokyo before his first novel was published in 1979. He has been a dedicated distance runner since 1982, completing more than thirty marathons and multiple Ironman triathlons. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, published in Japan in 2007 and translated into English by Philip Gabriel, is his only memoir.
